Good Day Sunshine

The sun actually made an appearance in the ‘burgh today, and it was glorious! I can’t remember the last time the temperature was actually above fifty degrees. I’ve spent the past few months consistently working in the depths of my college suite, so today I treated myself to a bit of fresh air. I happily took to the streets with light layers and newly thrifted sunnies.  I found these sunglasses at Salvation Army last weekend, and I just couldn’t resist. Their shape is ultra flattering for round baby faces like mine, and the gold trim is just too cool. Plus, they’re actually dark enough to keep the sun out of my eyes. (Stylish AND effective!) But of course the best thing about these sunglasses is the fact that they were 99¢. Oh, the lovely little things you can find in bargain bins!

One of my favorite rules of thrift shopping is to ALWAYS check out the accessories section before you leave. It may appear small, but most thrift stores price jewelry and accessories considerably well. In fact, many thrift stores in my area make all jewelry and accessories one price. I’m not gonna lie- you WILL encounter some junk as you search, but you’re also likely to find a really cool new piece to add to your accessories collection. Just be sure that you don’t have any specific expectations to meet while you thrift. I didn’t go into SA in search of sunglasses, but I was definitely pleasantly surprised when I found them. Are you pickin’ up what I’m puttin’ down? It’s just always worth a dig!

Snow days are perfect excuses to dress like royalty in jewels and faux fur. Pittsburgh may be facing an “arctic blast”, but nothing will stop me from having stylish fun.

Gwen Stefani for OPI

My dude just turned 21, leaving me in the dust with a beverage menu that consists of Shirley Temples and Italian sodas. But that’s ok because the highly anticipated Gwen Stefani OPI nail polish collaboration is happening!Image

Like most women, I’ve fallen in love with Gwen Stefani over the years. From her musical talent to her interesting sense of style, there’s no doubt (haha) that Ms. Stefani is an icon. She has been wildly successful in all of her endeavors since making the decision to fly solo, despite the never-ending pleads for the reunion of her old pop-ska group. Not only has she continued to make rad music, but she’s taken on the fast-paced world of fashion with her lines L.A.M.B. (an acronym for her first album, Love. Angel. Music. Baby.) and Harajuku Lovers. In addition to designing clothing and accessories, Stefani also has her own perfume line, Harajuku Lovers, which features a variety of scents called Love, Angel, Music, and Baby.

And now, the pregnant 44-year-old goddess and mother of two can say she has her own collection with OPI. This woman just can’t be stopped!

Shades: Hey Baby, I Sing In Color, True Stefani Fashion, Love. Angel. Music. Baby., and 4 In The Morning ($9)

I have to admit, I don’t really paint my nails that often, but between this collection and Demi Lovato’s The New Black, I think I’ll have to start!

27 Dresses? That’s Nothing. This Old Man Bought His Wife 55,000!

My boyfriend has been known to treat me to dinners, movies, and shopping sprees more than he probably should, but this news story takes spoiling your significant other to a whole new level.  According to Elizabeth Licata of The Gloss, an old man by the name of Paul Brockman has been buying his wife lavish ball gowns for 56 years.  Within this time, his collection has filled the family garage and even an entire warehouse with a total of 55,000 dresses, many of which Mrs. Brockman has never even seen.

It all started when the Brockmans moved from Germany to Ohio in 1955.  They started going ballroom dancing on a weekly basis, and Mr. Brockman decided that he wanted his wife to have a new gown every time they went.  He knew that she didn’t like shopping for herself, so he simply began buying dresses for her.  When Mrs. Brockman caught onto what her husband was doing, she asked him to stop, but he stubbornly continued to secretly store his purchases.

The Brockmans’ adult daughter only recently discovered the extent of her father’s collection when she found the family garage filled with dresses that had been hung on a two-tiered system of hanging rods he had built.  Her immediate reaction?  “What the hell is all of this?!”

When Mr. Brockman told his daughter that he intended to leave the dresses to her, she convinced him to sell some of the collection instead.  Since then, stores like Urban Outfitters and ModCloth have begun purchasing the gowns in order to create patterns for new dresses.  The Brockmans have also started holding monthly sales at their warehouse in LA, but it’s hard to say how long it will take to sell all of the pieces.

While many news outlets are marketing this story as sweet, I personally find it questionable.  Sure, it was all done with good intentions, but am I the only person who thinks it’s wrong for a husband to make such major financial sacrifices without his wife’s approval?  I can’t help but think that these purchases may have more to do with hoarding than love.

So please comment and weigh in:

Would you be mad at your spouse, or would you feel like a queen?

Summer Essential: Tarte’s Aqualillies palette!

DSC_2656 copy

Ok, I know makeup at the beach sounds a little ridiculous to some, but I’m actually quite supportive of it.  For me, doing my makeup is a therapeutic and artistic process that helps me relieve my daily stresses.  When warm weather strikes, I often sacrifice my cosmetic routine in fear of products melting off.  Luckily, I won’t have to make that sacrifice this summer thanks to Tarte’s latest palette from the waterproof Aqualillies collection.

I previously mentioned that I won a $100 Sephora shopping spree from kendallsplace on Youtube.  This was one of the first things I purchased after hearing grav3yardgirl rave about it, and it was $38 well spent!

The amazing thing about this palette is that everything in it seems to have been designed with summer fun in mind.  The colors are light and pretty, but they won’t fade away when you go for a dip in the pool or nearly sweat to death at a summer concert.

Most people are familiar with waterproof mascaras and eyeliners, but this palette offers so much more.  Ever hear of waterproof blush, bronzer, highlighters, or eyeshadows?  Tarte has thoughtfully placed 90% of your makeup products in one container along with a mirror.  And if you aren’t much of a swimmer or concertgoer, this palette is still great for sleepovers and vacations.  I would highly recommend this product to anyone who likes to look glam on the go!

Have you tried it yet?

Winner, Winner, Tofu Dinner :3 (My Dad Thinks Sephora is a Pizza Shop)

Ever have one of those weeks where everything is going terribly wrong…and then something amazing happens?

Upon checking my email yesterday, I discovered a message in my Youtube inbox from a beauty vlogger called KendallsPlace.  A few weeks ago, I entered a giveaway she was hosting in which 3 winners would be chosen to receive $100 Sephora giftcards.  Turns out, I’m one of the recipients!

First and foremost, I am extremely grateful that I was chosen to receive such a generous gift from Kendall and the other beauty vloggers that she teamed up with to make this happen.  (I’ll post links to all of them below.)

But of course I’ve already picked out the items that I’m buying on my spree, so I thought you’d like to have a look in my cart!

I chose these products because I feel like they will be perfect for the upcoming summer season.  I’m particularly excited to test out the Aqualillies palette following  grav3yardgirl‘s recommendation. ❤

The giftcode will be sent to me this weekend so I can finally place my order, and when these items arrive, I will definitely share my thoughts on them.

In the meantime, please be sure to check out the beautiful gurus who made this possible for me!
