Good Day Sunshine

The sun actually made an appearance in the ‘burgh today, and it was glorious! I can’t remember the last time the temperature was actually above fifty degrees. I’ve spent the past few months consistently working in the depths of my college suite, so today I treated myself to a bit of fresh air. I happily took to the streets with light layers and newly thrifted sunnies.  I found these sunglasses at Salvation Army last weekend, and I just couldn’t resist. Their shape is ultra flattering for round baby faces like mine, and the gold trim is just too cool. Plus, they’re actually dark enough to keep the sun out of my eyes. (Stylish AND effective!) But of course the best thing about these sunglasses is the fact that they were 99¢. Oh, the lovely little things you can find in bargain bins!

One of my favorite rules of thrift shopping is to ALWAYS check out the accessories section before you leave. It may appear small, but most thrift stores price jewelry and accessories considerably well. In fact, many thrift stores in my area make all jewelry and accessories one price. I’m not gonna lie- you WILL encounter some junk as you search, but you’re also likely to find a really cool new piece to add to your accessories collection. Just be sure that you don’t have any specific expectations to meet while you thrift. I didn’t go into SA in search of sunglasses, but I was definitely pleasantly surprised when I found them. Are you pickin’ up what I’m puttin’ down? It’s just always worth a dig!

Review: COVERGIRL Clean Whipped Creme Foundation

B00C67E0PG_covergirl_201305131_4627 kindly invited me to try out COVERGIRL’s Clean Whipped Creme Foundation a few weeks ago, and I’m so glad they did! COVERGIRL is one of the first cosmetic brands I ever used, and they definitely made learning how to wear makeup a breeze for me. Now that I’m in college, my makeup collection has clearly grown with the inclusion of expensive high-end products, but I’ll definitely never be one to turn down affordable drugstore cosmetics, especially from well-known quality brands like COVERGIRL.

I received a full-sized sample of the Clean Whipped Creme Foundation in shade 310 (Classic Ivory.)  I’ve opted for this shade in the past when purchasing COVERGIRL’s Clean Foundation for Sensitive Skin, so I was familiar with the way the color matched my skin tone.  Prior to trying this particular product, however, I had never worn a whipped foundation, so I was very excited to experience a new texture.

A quick twist of the lid on the adorably petite glass container revealed an airy version of the foundation I had grown up wearing. Using my favorite foundation brush, I applied a very small amount of the product that remained in the upside down lid and proceeded to blend it into my skin with circular movements. I was impressed with the way it felt on my skin.  It wasn’t “cakey” at all, which is often a problem I find with foundation (hence why I rarely wear it.)

While I don’t suffer from any major skin woes, I usually find myself covering sleepy under-eye circles with concealer, but I was pleasantly surprised with the coverage that this product provided.  No touchups necessary!

I found this to be true throughout the course of the day as well. Not only did my foundation last throughout all of my classes, but it was still in place when I returned from the gym!  Perhaps the best part of COVERGIRL’s Clean line is that the products can be easily removed at the end of the day with no disgusting residue left behind.

After using the product for over a week straight, I haven’t had any complaints regarding pimples or irritation, so I would definitely recommend this product to anyone looking for a cheap foundation fix.  It retails for about $7 at Walmart, so it’s perfect for someone who is new to makeup as well as the beauty lover on a budget.

Oh, and did I mention it’s being endorsed by the extremely talented and beautiful Janelle Monáe?

Beauty Necessity: White Pencil

If you don’t own a white eye pencil by now- well, what are you waiting for?  This slick beauty tool has so many benefits, and it won’t strain your wallet either.  Wet n Wild makes fabulous eye pencils in every color for a mere 99 cents, so picking up the entire Color Icon collection at CVS isn’t that out-of-line.

The white shade in particular can work wonders when it comes to highlighting your favorite facial features.  It can be applied to the waterline, the inner corners of your eyes, the browbone, the cupid’s bow, or anywhere else you may want to accentuate. How?  Allow me to do a quick run-through.

  • Have you ever wanted to have bigger eyes?  Using a white pencil as liner can create the illusion of a larger white part, ultimately making your eyes seem bigger.  This is a great trick for halloween costumes, but it can also be effective in real life.  Sometimes I add a thin layer of white above my usual black liner to create a subtle, yet awakened look.
  • Adding a touch of white to the inner corners of your eyes can leave you looking refreshed and happy.  Light will reflect on the corners and draw attention to your beautiful eyes.
  • White pencil can act as an eyeshadow primer when it is applied all over your eyelid- but be careful not to poke your eye out!  Warm up your pencil by heating it with a blowdryer then load the excess color onto a small brush to apply.  I don’t normally do this simply because I prefer the convenience of ready-to-use primers, but this is a great solution when you’re running low on your favorite priming product.

Brow Bones:

  • If the eyes are the windows to the soul, the eyebrows are the frames.  Applying a white pencil to your brow bones can give your eyebrows some definition and create a unique effect with your eyeshadow.  Give it a try- you’ll be surprised how different you might look!

Cupid’s Bow:

  • We’ve all heard of lip liner, but you might not have know that defining your cupid’s bow can give your lips an extra bit of pout.  I love highlighting this area because it draws even more attention to my favorite lip shades.

Can you think of any other ways to use a white pencil?  Please share your tips and tricks in the comments section- they might be posted on the site!
